Planet Magazine 17 January 1996 excerpt from page 11 "Local music, the final frontier. Ten months ago [Planet Magazine] announced our quest to produce the Planet CD, and it is finally here. Exile On Cameron Harper Street contains tracks by 21 Arizona bands, hand-picked by your friends at Planet. This special Cameron Harper collectors' issue features all the bands that make Exile a fine example of what Arizona has to offer the world of music." [Track 21 features the songDeprivation by Urethane.] excerpt from page 15 "Last year Chris Bailey, of the Tempe-based band Beats the Hell Out of Me [a thrash grunge band currently signed to Metal Blade Records], and his longtime friend, Simone Grey, began creating material for a band called Urethane. Born out of Bailey's desire to explore different areas of music comes a CD consisting of [11] tracks that he hopes to have completed by February. "Bailey describes Urethane's sound as a departure from his other work as a musician. 'I've known Simone for about 10 years,' comments Bailey. 'Nine months ago we began writing material together and it just clicked. I had really been getting into keyboards and samplers. So we began experimenting with drum loops, a bass and piano, along with unusual instruments and a sampling machine. Half the songs sound fairly electronic while the other half are composed of acoustic and classic guitar in bare-bones arrangements. On top of that, Simone...has a very unique voice.' "Bailey plans to continue producing new material with Beats the Hell Out of Me, but also is intent on pursuing all possibilities with Urethane. Aside from the musical style itself, Bailey notes an aspect of Urethane's appeal on a different level. 'In my opinion,' Bailey says, 'the music has a much bigger commercial appeal than my other projects -- especially in the Phoenix radio market.' "Currently, Bailey is spending most of his time (and money), as he puts it, 'going into debt buying all the gear I need. But I don't care. It's nice being able to have the tools you need to create wht you want.' "If you haven't hear Urethane before, there's a good reason. "'So far we've only played a handful of local low-key shows,' explains Bailey. 'And we haven't really gone out of our way to advertise. Right now we're just really into what we're doing. It's a different crowd, full of very open-minded people. It's great to play a show with so many different kinds of music.'
"Urethane are currently awaiting the release of their first CD, due sometime in the early portion of the year. A word of advice from Bailey, the disc was 'recorded in the dark and that's the way it should be listened to.'" -- Sloan Torpie
